The story goes that...
... One day, the gods Loki, Thor and Hoenir went to a waterfall whose water was as pure as the heart of the wisest king of Norway. While the gods were resting, an otter appeared and Loki killed it, then kept its skin.
A little later, the three gods stayed with the king of the dwarf people who recognized in the animal his own son who liked to fish in the form of an otter. With the help of his two other sons, named Fáfnir and Regin, he captured the three gods with an unbreakable magic chain.
In compensation for the death of his son, the king demanded a huge amount of gold, and it was Loki who was sent to collect the debt. The mischievous god then stole the treasure of a rich noble dwarf, but the latter did not let himself be taken away and cursed the gold as well as all those who would become its owners. Loki repeated the warning to the dwarf king and left with the other two gods.
After some time, Fáfnir and his brother Regin demanded a share of the treasure from their father, but when he refused, a violent dispute broke out and the dwarf king was murdered by his sons. Fáfnir then took the treasure and threatened his brother, who fled.
Fáfnir was finally the sole owner of the treasure, he never left it and stayed locked up day and night, jealously guarding his gold that had become so precious. As the curse of the gold ate away at him from within, he gradually changed. He lost his hair, his skin became scaly and he went completely mad. Thus Fáfnir became a dragon, guarding every piece of gold from his cursed treasure.
