Legend has it that ....

... Buccaneers were pirates mainly from the Caribbean during the 17th century. The term comes from the word "boucan," a wooden grate used by the Taino Indians to smoke meat. The first buccaneers were hunters of wild cattle and hogs who smoked meat on these grates, selling their product to passing ships.

Over time, these hunters turned to piracy, mainly attacking Spanish ships and colonies in the Caribbean.
